Privacy Policy

1. Who we are
AquaTrader ("we", "our", "us") is a Canadian online marketplace for aquarium hobbyists to buy, sell, and trade livestock, plants, and equipment. We operate at aquatrader.ca and are subject to Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and, where applicable, Quebec's Act Respecting the Protection of Personal Information in the Private Sector (Law 25).
2. Information we collect
- Account information: your name and email address when you register.
- Profile information: optional display name, avatar photo, and city/region.
- Listing content: titles, descriptions, photos, prices, and location you post.
- Messages: text you send to other users through our chat system.
- Usage data: pages visited, listing views, and general interaction data used to improve the platform.
We do not collect payment information. All transactions are arranged directly between buyers and sellers.
3. How we use your information
- To create and manage your account.
- To display your listings to other users.
- To facilitate messaging between buyers and sellers.
- To send transactional emails (new messages, offer notifications).
- To detect and prevent fraud, spam, and abuse.
- To improve the platform through aggregate, anonymized analytics.
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.
4. Cookies and local storage
AquaTrader uses a small number of strictly necessary cookies and browser storage to operate:

We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking cookies. You may clear cookies at any time through your browser settings; doing so will sign you out of your account.
5. Data retention
We retain your account information for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal information within 30 days, except where retention is required by law. Listing content and messages may be retained in anonymized or aggregate form for moderation and safety purposes.
6. Your rights
Under PIPEDA and Law 25, you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate information.
- Withdraw consent and request deletion of your account and data.
- Lodge a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC).

7. Third-party services
- Supabase — database, authentication, and real-time messaging (servers in North America).
- Vercel — hosting and content delivery (servers in North America).
- Resend — transactional email delivery.
Each provider is bound by its own privacy policy and, where applicable, data processing agreements consistent with Canadian privacy law.
8. Children
AquaTrader is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the revised policy with a new effective date. Material changes will be notified by email to registered users.
